The ByteDance AI video model has sparked a sharp rally in shares of Chinese media and artificial intelligence application companies, following strong early reactions to the quality of its AI-generated video content.
Publishing firm COL Group Co. surged to its 20% daily upper trading limit, while Shanghai Film Co. and gaming and entertainment company Perfect World Co. each climbed 10%. The broader onshore benchmark CSI 300 Index rose 1.4%, reflecting wider investor enthusiasm.
The rally followed ByteDance’s launch on February 7 of Seedance 2.0, the latest iteration of its AI video creation app. ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, surprised analysts and industry observers with the realism and flexibility of the generated clips, reigniting optimism around China’s homegrown AI capabilities.
Analysts Call It a Potential Turning Point
The ByteDance new video model quickly became a focal point of industry discussion. Analysts at Kaiyuan Securities, including Fang Guangzhao, described the development as possibly marking a “singularity moment” for artificial intelligence in film and television.
According to the analysts, Seedance 2.0 delivered impressive real-world test results, supporting inputs across text, images, video, and audio, while achieving breakthroughs in key technical capabilities. Firms with strong intellectual property portfolios and established platform traffic are expected to benefit the most, they noted.
Rising Demand for China’s AI ‘Killer Apps’
The momentum generated by the ByteDance AI video model reflects a broader surge in demand for shares of Chinese companies building high-impact AI applications. Investor appetite for such firms has been growing in recent months, following a strong AI-driven bull run in China’s stock market last year.
Another recent example is Kuaishou Technology’s AI video-generation tool Kling, which has gained traction with global users. As of January 2, Kling ranked as the top-grossing graphics and design app on iPhones in both South Korea and Russia, highlighting rising international interest in Chinese-developed AI tools.
Together, these developments underscore how advances in domestic AI technology are increasingly influencing investor sentiment and stock performance across China’s media and technology sectors.
