Carbon Robotics Large Plant Model (LPM), announced this week, marks a major leap forward in how autonomous farming machines understand plants in real time.
Seattle-based Carbon Robotics, best known for its LaserWeeder robots, says the new AI model can instantly recognize plant species—allowing farmers to eliminate new weeds without retraining the system.
What Makes the Carbon Robotics Large Plant Model Different
The Carbon Robotics Large Plant Model is trained on more than 150 million plant images and data points, gathered from autonomous robots operating on over 100 farms across 15 countries.
This model now powers Carbon AI, the intelligence layer inside the company’s laser-based weed-killing robots.
Before LPM, every unfamiliar weed—or even the same weed growing in different soil conditions—required manual data labeling and retraining.
“That process took about 24 hours every time,” said Paul Mikesell, founder and CEO of Carbon Robotics.
With the Carbon Robotics Large Plant Model, that delay is gone.
Farmers Can Now Teach Robots Instantly
The breakthrough with the Carbon Robotics Large Plant Model is its ability to generalize. Even if the system has never seen a specific plant before, it can still identify and classify it accurately.
“The farmer can say, ‘This is a new weed—I want you to kill this,’ in real time,” Mikesell explained. “There’s no new labeling or retraining because the model understands plants at a much deeper level.”
Farmers interact with the system through a visual interface, selecting images captured by the robot to decide what should be eliminated and what should be protected.

Carbon Robotics began developing the Large Plant Model shortly after shipping its first machines in 2022. Mikesell brings deep AI experience from his previous work at Uber and on Meta Oculus hardware.
That background helped the company build neural networks capable of understanding plant structure, species relationships, and visual variation—without explicit retraining.
Software Update, Immediate Impact
The Carbon Robotics Large Plant Model will roll out to existing LaserWeeder customers via a software update. As robots continue operating in the field, they will keep feeding new data back into the model—further improving accuracy over time.
Carbon Robotics has raised over $185 million from investors including NVIDIA’s NVentures, Bond, and Anthos Capital, underscoring strong confidence in AI-driven precision agriculture.

The Carbon Robotics Large Plant Model signals a shift away from rigid, rule-based agricultural automation toward adaptive, learning-based systems. By removing retraining bottlenecks, farmers can respond faster to invasive species, changing climates, and evolving crop conditions—while reducing herbicide use.
“We have enough data now,” Mikesell said, “that we should be able to look at any plant and understand what it is—even if we’ve never seen it before.”
