ChatGPT usage in India is rapidly accelerating, with young users leading the adoption wave. OpenAI revealed that individuals aged 18 to 24 account for nearly 50% of all messages sent to ChatGPT in the country, while users under 30 contribute around 80% of total activity.
The data highlights how India’s younger population is shaping AI adoption trends, particularly in professional and technical applications.
ChatGPT Usage in India Driven by Young Users
OpenAI’s latest insights show that ChatGPT usage in India is heavily concentrated among younger demographics. The company said users between 18 and 24 years old make up almost half of total interactions with the AI chatbot.
This strong engagement among young users signals growing acceptance of artificial intelligence tools for productivity, learning, and digital workflows. The trend also reflects India’s expanding developer and student ecosystem, which is increasingly relying on AI-powered assistance.
Work and Coding Dominate AI Interactions
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT usage in India is largely focused on professional tasks. About 35% of all messages from Indian users relate to work, compared to a global average of 30%.
The company’s coding assistant Codex is seeing particularly strong traction in the country. OpenAI reported that Indian users access Codex three times more frequently than the global median. Weekly usage has also surged fourfold since the release of the tool’s Mac app two weeks ago.
Additionally, Indian users submit three times more coding-related queries than the global median, highlighting the country’s strong focus on software development and technical skills.
These findings align with earlier research from Anthropic, which reported that 45.2% of Claude’s tasks in India are linked to software-related use cases.
How Indians Are Using ChatGPT Beyond Work
Beyond professional applications, ChatGPT usage in India also reflects a wide range of everyday use cases. OpenAI said 35% of messages from Indian users request guidance, while 20% involve general information queries. Another 20% of interactions focus on writing assistance or content creation support.
The data suggests that Indian users are integrating AI into both personal and professional workflows, reinforcing the country’s role as a major growth market for AI services.
India Emerges as OpenAI’s Key Market
India has become OpenAI’s second-largest market globally, with more than 100 million weekly users. The company has been actively expanding its presence in the country to accelerate AI adoption.
OpenAI introduced a sub-$5 subscription tier in India and previously ran promotional campaigns to encourage usage. The company’s chief economist Ronnie Chatterji said the rapid pace of AI adoption highlights the need for data-driven insights to guide policy and industry decisions.
OpenAI Expands Partnerships and Infrastructure in India
The surge in ChatGPT usage in India comes alongside OpenAI’s broader expansion efforts in the region. The company is opening new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru and has partnered with Tata Group to secure 100 megawatts of AI compute capacity while distributing ChatGPT Enterprise through Tata Consultancy Services.
OpenAI has also formed partnerships with fintech firm Pine Labs, travel platforms Ixigo and Makemytrip, and food and grocery delivery company Eternal. Additionally, it is working with educational institutions to distribute AI tools to more than 100,000 students over the next six years.
The company’s growing footprint reflects India’s strategic importance as a global hub for AI talent, development, and large-scale technology adoption.
