Claude Just Hit No. 1 on the App Store — And a Pentagon Fight Is Why

Anthropic’s Claude just did something nobody saw coming — it knocked ChatGPT off the No. 1 spot on the Apple US App Store. And ironically, a bruising government fight is entirely to thank for it.

As of Saturday evening, Claude claimed the top position in the free app rankings, a spot it held through Sunday morning. To put that in perspective: at the end of January, Claude wasn’t even in the top 100.

From Invisible to Unstoppable

The climb has been nothing short of remarkable. Claude sat somewhere in the top 20 for most of February before accelerating sharply — sixth on Wednesday, fourth on Thursday, and then straight to number one by Saturday.

According to SensorTower data, the numbers behind this surge are staggering. Daily signups broke Anthropic’s all-time record every single day this week. Free users jumped more than 60% since January, and paid subscribers have more than doubled in 2026.

The Pentagon Drama That Fueled It All

So what triggered this explosion in interest? Anthropic spent weeks in tense negotiations with the U.S. Department of Defense, pushing for hard limits that would prevent its AI from being used for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons.

The Pentagon didn’t take it well. President Trump directed all federal agencies to cut ties with Anthropic, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth moved to designate the company a supply-chain risk. The story blew up across social media — and millions of curious users apparently decided it was the perfect time to finally try Claude for themselves.

OpenAI Steps Into the Gap

With Anthropic blacklisted, OpenAI wasted little time. CEO Sam Altman announced a new agreement with the Pentagon that he says includes its own safeguards on surveillance and autonomous weapons — positioning OpenAI as the military-friendly alternative.

But here’s the twist: the controversy that was meant to hurt Anthropic ended up being its biggest marketing moment ever. While OpenAI signed the Pentagon deal, Claude was quietly becoming the most downloaded free app in America.

Sometimes the best publicity is the kind you never asked for.
