On Monday, Mozilla announced that Firefox will soon allow users to block all current and future generative AI features with a single toggle. The update begins rolling out with Firefox version 148 on February 24.
For users who prefer a middle ground, Mozilla is also offering granular controls to turn individual AI features on or off.

With Firefox 148, users will see a new AI controls section inside desktop browser settings.
Those who want a fully AI-free experience can enable “Block AI enhancements.” When switched on:
- AI pop-ups and prompts disappear
- Users won’t see reminders for new AI features

“AI is changing the web, and people want very different things from it,” the company wrote. “Listening to our community led us to build AI controls.”
Leadership Signals a Choice-First AI Strategy
The move aligns closely with statements from Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, who was appointed CEO in December. While Enzor-DeMeo confirmed Mozilla will continue investing in AI, he emphasized that AI should never be forced on users.
“AI should always be a choice—something people can easily turn off,” he said.
That stance is now concretely reflected in Firefox block AI features, positioning Firefox as a privacy-first alternative in an increasingly AI-heavy browser market.
Competing in a Changing Browser Landscape
Mozilla’s announcement comes as browsers face renewed pressure from AI-centric challengers like Arc, Perplexity, Opera, and OpenAI-backed products that blend search, chat, and browsing.
At the same time, Mozilla is pushing transparency beyond Firefox itself. According to CNBC, Mozilla President Mark Surman is building what he calls a “rebel alliance” of startups and technologists focused on trustworthy AI and oversight.
