Google has just made a power move in the global AI race. The tech giant announced a $15 billion investment to build a new Google AI hub in India, marking its biggest commitment yet to the country’s tech ecosystem.
The hub, set to rise in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, will feature a 1-gigawatt data center that powers advanced AI operations, research, and innovation. The investment will be rolled out over the next five years, through 2030.
A Big Bet on India’s AI Future
This marks Google’s largest investment in India, following its earlier $10 billion pledge in 2020. The company currently employs more than 14,000 people across the nation and already operates major cloud regions in Delhi and Mumbai.
The new Google AI hub in India will become a central point in Google’s global network of AI facilities — spanning 12 countries worldwide. According to Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian, the project will eventually scale to “multiple gigawatts” and turn Visakhapatnam into a global connectivity hub.
“We see this hub not just serving India but from India serving Asia and other parts of the world,” said Kurian.
Strategic Partnerships & Infrastructure Push
Google is partnering with Bharti Airtel and AdaniConneX to build both the data center and a subsea cable landing station in Visakhapatnam. This move will strengthen India’s digital backbone and improve international data transfer routes.
Kurian confirmed that Google will bring its Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) and Gemini AI models to the new hub, enabling advanced local AI processing for everything from data analytics to cloud-based machine learning.
Government Support and Local Momentum
India’s IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw praised the announcement, calling the new Google AI hub in India a key step toward achieving the nation’s AI Mission goals. He also urged Google to consider expanding to the Andaman Islands as a future data hub to enhance India’s connectivity with Southeast Asia.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Digital India” vision continues to encourage self-reliance while welcoming international collaboration in emerging tech sectors like AI and cloud infrastructure.
