A major controversy is brewing in Washington after Senate Republican Marsha Blackburn accused Google’s AI model, Gemma, of spreading false rape allegations against her. In a strongly worded letter to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Blackburn demanded answers and urged the company to shut down its AI system until it can prevent such serious misinformation.
According to Fox News Digital, the senator’s letter alleged that Google’s AI generated a fake story claiming she was involved in a sexual relationship with a state trooper in 1987 — a completely fabricated narrative. “There has never been such an accusation, there is no such individual, and there are no such news stories,” Blackburn clarified.
AI Misinformation Sparks Political Outrage
Blackburn’s letter came shortly after a Senate Commerce Committee hearing focused on “jawboning” — a term describing how government officials may pressure tech platforms to censor speech. During that session, Blackburn grilled Markham Erickson, Google’s VP for Government Affairs and Public Policy, about AI hallucinations — instances when an AI model creates false or misleading information.
She cited the case of conservative activist Robby Starbuck, who reportedly sued Google after Gemma allegedly linked him to false accusations of sexual assault and child abuse. Blackburn said that when she asked Gemma about herself, it generated a similar fake sexual misconduct story complete with fabricated links to non-existent news sites.
“This Is Not a Harmless Hallucination,” Blackburn Warns
“This is not a harmless hallucination,” Blackburn wrote. “It is an act of defamation produced and distributed by a Google-owned AI model.” She called the false claim a “catastrophic failure of oversight and ethical responsibility.”
The senator argued that Google’s AI models appear to show consistent bias against conservatives, either intentionally or as a result of ideologically skewed training data. “Whether on purpose or not, the effect is the same: Google’s AI models are shaping dangerous political narratives by spreading falsehoods,” she added.
Google Asked to Respond Before November 6
In her letter, Blackburn demanded that Google provide answers by November 6, including:
- How and why Gemma generated the false claims.
- What safeguards or AI guardrails failed.
- What steps Google is taking to prevent political or ideological bias in AI systems.
- How the company plans to remove defamatory content and prevent future incidents.
She also criticized Erickson’s earlier comment at the hearing that “large language models will hallucinate.” Her reply was sharp: “My response remains the same — shut it down until you can control it.”

The controversy underscores growing concerns about AI misinformation, especially when false information targets public figures. As generative AI tools become more powerful, experts warn that AI hallucinations could escalate into defamation, reputational harm, and political manipulation.
