Google is rolling out a powerful set of Google AI shopping updates just in time for the holiday rush — and they’re designed to cut the hassle out of online shopping. From conversational search to agentic checkout and even an AI that calls local stores for you, Google wants to make browsing and buying feel more natural, faster, and far less tedious.
Vidhya Srinivasan, Google’s VP and GM of Ads & Commerce, summed up the vision perfectly: shopping should feel fun again. And with these new Google AI shopping updates, Google is trying to bring that fun back while eliminating the frustrating parts.
Conversational Shopping in AI Mode
The first major change: shoppers can now ask detailed questions using AI Mode, Google’s conversational search experience. Instead of manually typing specific filters or keywords, users can simply talk to the AI as if chatting with a friend.
Ask for “cozy autumn sweaters,” and AI Mode will show visual inspiration with pricing, reviews, and real-time availability. Comparing skincare products? It’ll generate a comparison table instead of endless scrolling.
All of this is powered by Google’s massive Shopping Graph, containing 50 billion product listings—2 billion of which are updated every hour. And yes, sponsored listings will appear in AI Mode, though not yet in the Gemini app.
Gemini App Gets Smarter Shopping Suggestions
Another part of the Google AI shopping updates is improved shopping capabilities within the Gemini app. Instead of simple text suggestions, Gemini now generates richer shopping ideas with visuals and detailed insights.
This feature is currently U.S.-only, but more regions are expected soon.
Agentic Checkout: Google Buys It for You
Google’s new “agentic checkout” may be the most convenient feature yet. After tracking an item’s price, you can give Google permission to automatically purchase it on your behalf using Google Pay — once the price hits your target.
Supported merchants include Wayfair, Chewy, Quince, and select Shopify stores. Google emphasizes privacy: it will always ask for confirmation before checkout.
“This feature saves time for shoppers and brings returning customers back to retailers,” said Lilian Rincon, VP of Product Management for Google Shopping.
AI That Calls Local Stores For You
One of the most surprising Google AI shopping updates is an AI tool that literally calls stores on your behalf.
Using Duplex (Google’s conversational AI system), the AI can phone nearby shops to ask:
- Do you have this product in stock?
- What’s the price?
- Are there any promotions?
After calling, the AI summarizes everything for you.
This is rolling out in the U.S. for product categories like toys, electronics, beauty, and health. Just search “[product] near me” and tap Let Google Call.
Google promises the AI won’t overwhelm retailers with endless calls, and stores can opt out at any time. Calls always start with the AI identifying itself clearly.
Why These Google AI Shopping Updates Matter
With these upgrades, Google isn’t just improving search — it’s repositioning itself as an AI shopping assistant that helps you:
- browse visually
- compare smarter
- buy faster
- avoid out-of-stock surprises
- eliminate repetitive price checks
- save time with automated calls
And all of it lands right before the most competitive shopping season of the year.
