Google has announced a major upgrade to Maps in India — powered by Gemini AI. The new Google Maps Gemini India update brings a smarter, safer, and more localized navigation experience with features designed specifically for Indian roads and driving habits.

Launched first in the U.S., the Gemini integration is now making its way to India, offering hands-free AI assistance, contextual navigation tips, and detailed information about places of interest — all tailored to local users.

Gemini Comes to India with Local Language Support

According to Miriam Daniel, Vice President and Head of Google Maps, adapting Gemini for India required deep localization.

“When we say localizing for India, it’s not just about language,” Daniel explained in a virtual briefing. “It’s about adapting to how Indians use Maps — how they talk, how they ask for directions, and even how they identify places.”

The Google Maps Gemini India rollout will support nine Indian languages at launch and will be available for both Android and iOS users in the coming weeks.

AI-Powered Safety Alerts and Smarter Navigation

Safety is at the center of the new Google Maps Gemini India experience. Drivers will now receive visual and audio alerts when approaching accident-prone zones — a feature developed in collaboration with local authorities.

This system will initially launch in Gurugram, Cyberabad (Hyderabad), Chandigarh, and Faridabad, before expanding nationwide.

The company’s move comes after increased scrutiny over navigation reliability in India — especially following a tragic incident in Uttar Pradesh last year, where faulty route guidance led to a fatal accident.

“We know real-world conditions change rapidly,” said Anal Ghosh, Senior Program Manager at Google Maps. “Maps can’t always be 100% accurate, so we encourage users to stay alert and use AI assistance as a complement, not a replacement.”

Partnership with NHAI for Real-Time Road Data

Google has teamed up with India’s National Highways Authority (NHAI) to enhance real-time traffic and infrastructure data. This partnership enables Google Maps Gemini India to show live information about:

• Road closures and diversions
• Ongoing construction or repair work
• Public restrooms, restaurants, and fuel stations along national highways

This collaboration aims to make long-distance travel more convenient and reliable for millions of Indian drivers.

New Alerts, Speed Limits, and Flyover Voice Support

The Google Maps Gemini India update also introduces proactive route disruption notifications, even when you’re not actively navigating. Users in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru will receive alerts about major delays or accidents before they start their trips.

Additionally, Maps will now display speed limits during navigation, using verified data from regional traffic authorities. This feature will first launch in nine cities:
Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Hyderabad (Cyberabad), Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Noida.

To make driving even smoother, Google is expanding its flyover navigation feature — now with voice guidance for Android and iOS users.
