The AI video generation race just got even hotter.

Google is officially rolling out its powerful Veo 2 AI video generator to Gemini Advanced subscribers, giving creators access to the company’s next-generation video model — and putting direct pressure on OpenAI’s viral Sora platform.

Starting this week, users who pay for Gemini Advanced (Google’s premium AI plan) can select Veo 2 from the model menu inside Gemini apps and generate short, high-quality video clips directly from text prompts.

What Veo 2 Offers:

  • Generate 8-second AI videos at 720p resolution
  • Standard 16:9 aspect ratio (perfect for YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram)
  • Built-in SynthID watermarking for AI transparency
  • Export as MP4 or share instantly via the Gemini app

Google is placing strict monthly limits on video generations for now, and the feature currently isn’t available for Workspace business or education accounts.

Beyond standalone video generation, Google is also blending Veo 2 into its experimental Whisk Animate feature, part of Google Labs. This new tool lets users turn AI-generated images into animated 8-second Veo 2 videos, offering yet another path for creators to turn static prompts into dynamic content.

While the early use cases seem targeted at social media creators and hobbyists, Google DeepMind’s CEO, Demis Hassabis, hinted at much bigger ambitions. The long-term goal is to integrate Veo’s video generation capabilities with Gemini’s language models to give AI a richer understanding of the physical world.

But not everyone is celebrating.

A 2024 study commissioned by the Animation Guild warned that AI video generation could threaten more than 100,000 jobs across Hollywood’s film, TV, and animation industries by 2026 — raising both creative and ethical concerns as tools like Veo 2 gain mainstream traction.

For now, Google’s move shows just how fast the AI video arms race is accelerating, with Veo 2, OpenAI’s Sora, and Runway Gen-4 all jockeying for the future of AI-generated content.
