Instagram AI Age Detection is now the platform’s latest weapon in its fight to safeguard young users from adult content and inappropriate interactions. Meta announced on Monday that it is actively deploying AI-powered systems to identify teens who may have lied about their age to avoid built-in protections on Instagram.

According to Meta, if Instagram AI Age Detection suspects an account belongs to a teenager, even when the profile claims an adult birthdate — the platform will automatically assign that user to a restricted “Teen Account.” These accounts limit exposure to sensitive content, control who can contact the teen, and require parental consent for key settings changes if the user is under 16.

Instagram introduced Teen Accounts last year as part of its push for a safer social experience for younger users, and now Instagram AI Age Detection is the core technology ensuring that teens can’t easily bypass those safeguards by faking their age during signup.

Meta confirmed that beyond scanning account information, Instagram AI Age Detection can flag suspicious accounts through indirect clues like birthday wishes in posts, reports from other users, and behavioral patterns that suggest a user is underage.

The company emphasized that while the AI system is designed for accuracy, users can still manually review and update their age if incorrectly flagged. Instagram is also taking steps to involve parents more directly, including sending notifications that explain the importance of providing a correct birthdate and how parents can check their teen’s account settings.

Meta’s broader efforts to protect young users extend beyond Instagram. Just two weeks ago, Teen Accounts were also introduced on Facebook and Messenger — and so far, the company claims over 54 million teen accounts have been enrolled globally, with 97% of users aged 13-15 remaining in protected settings.

As the digital landscape evolves, Instagram AI Age Detection signals a significant step toward proactive online safety, ensuring teens encounter fewer risks as they explore social media.
