MatX AI Chip Startup Funding Hits $500M as Nvidia Challenger Eyes 2027 Production

MatX AI chip startup funding has surged to $500 million after the company closed a Series B round led by Jane Street and Situational Awareness, an investment fund created by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner.

The round positions MatX as one of the most serious contenders in the race to build a Nvidia GPU alternative LLM training solution — a market that has become increasingly competitive as demand for large language model infrastructure accelerates.

Other investors include Marvell Technology, NFDG, Spark Capital and Stripe co-founders Patrick Collison and John Collison. Founder and CEO Reiner Pope announced the raise on LinkedIn, though the company did not disclose its current valuation.

MatX says its goal is ambitious: develop processors that are 10 times better at training large language models and delivering inference performance compared to Nvidia’s GPUs.
