In a major industry move, OpenAI has partnered with Broadcom to develop its first in-house AI chip — the OpenAI Broadcom AI processor — as it seeks greater control over its computing power and infrastructure. Announced Monday, the OpenAI Broadcom AI processor collaboration will see Broadcom design, produce, and deploy the chips starting in the second half of 2026. The companies plan to roll out 10 gigawatts of custom AI chips, capable of powering over eight million U.S. homes — five times the output of the Hoover Dam.

“Partnering with Broadcom is a critical step in building the infrastructure needed to unlock AI’s full potential,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.

This partnership represents OpenAI’s latest move in expanding its hardware independence.
