OpenAI Partners With Reliance in a major move to reshape digital entertainment in India, introducing AI-powered conversational search for the streaming platform JioHotstar. The collaboration brings natural language search, personalized recommendations, and multilingual capabilities to one of India’s largest streaming services.
The partnership signals a growing push toward AI-driven content discovery as technology companies race to transform how audiences find and interact with entertainment.

With OpenAI Partners With Reliance at the center of this initiative, JioHotstar will integrate AI-powered conversational search using OpenAI’s application programming interfaces (APIs). The feature allows users to search for movies, TV shows, and live sports through voice and text prompts in multiple languages.
The system delivers recommendations based on user preferences and viewing history, making content discovery more intuitive and personalized. The rollout will cover both live and on-demand formats, enhancing how audiences navigate streaming content.
In addition to in-app functionality, the collaboration will also enable JioHotstar recommendations to appear within ChatGPT. Users searching for entertainment through ChatGPT will receive contextual suggestions and direct links to the platform’s catalogue, creating a two-way discovery experience.
Strategic Expansion of OpenAI in India
The announcement that OpenAI Partners With Reliance reflects OpenAI’s broader expansion strategy in India, one of its fastest-growing markets. The country currently hosts more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, making it the company’s second-largest user base after the United States.
OpenAI also plans to strengthen its local presence by opening new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru later this year, in addition to its existing base in New Delhi.
The partnership was unveiled at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, where CEO Sam Altman appeared alongside industry leaders, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Google CEO Sundar Pichai.
Streaming Platforms Embrace Conversational AI
The move follows a broader industry trend toward conversational interfaces in entertainment platforms. By enabling users to interact with content through natural language, companies aim to simplify discovery and enhance engagement.
Netflix previously tested a ChatGPT-powered search experience to help viewers find content using conversational queries, while Google introduced Gemini-powered discovery features for its Google TV platform.
Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s chief executive of applications, said the collaboration aims to bring more personalized AI experiences to entertainment and live sports, helping users move from curiosity to relevant content through natural interaction.
JioStar vice chairperson Uday Shankar added that embedding AI into content discovery could fundamentally reshape how audiences engage with programming.
Part of OpenAI’s Broader India Initiative
The development where OpenAI Partners With Reliance is part of the company’s wider “OpenAI for India” initiative focused on expanding infrastructure, enterprise adoption, and education partnerships.
Other initiatives include collaborations with Tata Group for AI-ready data centers and enterprise deployments, as well as partnerships with Indian companies such as Pine Labs, Eternal, and MakeMyTrip.
The strategy highlights India’s growing importance in global AI adoption and positions conversational AI at the center of future digital experiences.
