OpenAI is redefining how we use AI apps by launching what amounts to a ChatGPT app store, challenging tech giants like Apple and Google. The announcement came during its DevDay 2025 event, where CEO Sam Altman revealed that users will soon be able to access third-party apps directly inside ChatGPT.
The company also introduced an Apps SDK — a developer toolkit enabling the creation of applications that live and operate within ChatGPT itself.
How the ChatGPT App Store Works
When users mention an app name within ChatGPT (e.g. “Spotify, make me a playlist”), the system will prompt them to connect and clarify data permissions. Results from apps will appear in-chat, creating a seamless, conversational experience.
According to Altman, this new model “enables a generation of apps that are interactive, adaptive, and personalized — that you can chat with.”
Developers will be able to submit their apps for review later this year. OpenAI also plans to introduce an app directory, with higher-visibility slots for those meeting strict design and performance standards. Monetization options are expected to arrive soon via the platform’s commerce features.
Inaugural App Partners & Future Expansion
Early apps available inside ChatGPT include Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify, and Zillow. OpenAI has said that additional integrations — such as Uber, Instacart, Target, AllTrails, and Peloton — will follow later this year.
Why This Matters
App stores are a key revenue generator for Apple and Google, relying on commissions from in-app purchases. By embedding a ChatGPT app store, OpenAI is positioning itself as a contender in this lucrative space.
If successful, this approach could shift how users discover and use digital services — making app discovery conversational and context-aware.
