Perplexity drops AI advertising in a significant shift that highlights growing concerns about trust and transparency in artificial intelligence platforms. The San Francisco-based AI startup has abandoned its advertising experiments, warning that ads could undermine confidence in chatbot responses and weaken user trust.
The decision comes at a time when many competing AI companies are exploring advertising models to generate revenue from free users.
Perplexity Drops AI Advertising to Maintain Trust
Perplexity drops AI advertising after initially testing sponsored answers in 2024, where labeled ads appeared beneath chatbot responses. While the company maintained that these ads did not influence the system’s outputs, executives acknowledged that their presence could still create doubt among users.
According to company leadership, users must believe they are receiving the best possible and unbiased answers to continue using the product and remain willing to pay for it. Advertising, even when transparent, risks making users question the reliability of AI-generated information.
Because of this concern, the company began phasing out ads late last year and confirmed it has no immediate plans to reintroduce them.
AI Industry Moves Toward Ad-Based Revenue Models
The move to drop Perplexity AI advertising stands in contrast to broader industry trends. Many AI companies are introducing advertising to monetize their platforms and offset the high costs of developing large language models.
OpenAI recently began testing advertising within its ChatGPT platform for free users, displaying sponsored content below responses while emphasizing that ads do not influence answers. Google has also incorporated advertising into AI-powered search features such as AI Mode and AI Overviews, though it has not yet introduced ads into its Gemini chatbot. Meanwhile, Anthropic has committed to keeping its Claude chatbot ad-free.
These varying strategies show how companies are experimenting with different approaches to balancing revenue generation with user trust.
Subscription Model Drives Perplexity’s Business
Perplexity drops AI advertising as the company continues to rely primarily on subscription revenue. The startup offers both free services and paid plans ranging from $20 to $200 per month.
Executives said the company has more than 100 million users and generates about $200 million in annualised revenue. Perplexity is currently valued at approximately $18 billion.
The company has also introduced shopping features on its platform but does not take commissions or earn revenue from product sales, further emphasizing its focus on delivering reliable information rather than commercial monetisation.
Accuracy Remains the Core Priority
Company executives stressed that Perplexity’s primary goal is delivering accurate answers and maintaining credibility. Leadership described the company as being in the “accuracy business,” prioritising truthful responses over advertising revenue.
Although the company may reconsider advertising in the future, executives said the model currently appears misaligned with user expectations and may never become necessary if subscription growth continues.
The decision underscores a growing industry debate over how AI companies can generate revenue while preserving transparency and long-term user trust.
