Pinterest Lands $1 Billion Investment from fund manager Elliott Investment Management, marking a significant show of confidence as the company doubles down on artificial intelligence and navigates a shifting advertising landscape.
The $1 billion stake will be used to repurchase shares of Pinterest’s Class A common stock through an accelerated share repurchase agreement, the company said in a Tuesday (March 3) news release.
CEO Bill Ready highlighted the company’s recent performance, saying Pinterest delivered record revenue in 2025. He added that users reached all-time highs for ten consecutive quarters and that the platform now sees more than 80 billion monthly searches, driven in part by continued innovation in AI-powered visual search.
Pinterest Lands $1 Billion Investment Amid AI-Focused Growth Strategy
Marc Steinberg, partner at Elliott and a Pinterest board member, said the firm first invested in 2022 and maintains strong conviction in the company’s trajectory.
The investment arrives at a pivotal moment. According to a recent report from The Information, Pinterest has been racing to add more artificial intelligence tools to its app as it faces a slowing ad business and growing competition from AI chatbots.
Pinterest AI visual search advertising growth has been a central theme of the company’s strategy. By improving recommendation algorithms to surface ads and posts aligned with user search behavior, the company aims to increase both engagement and advertiser returns.
The report said these updates have helped generate a 10% return on advertisers’ spending. Pinterest is also working to improve user growth, revenue expansion and the overall effectiveness of its ad platform.
Pinterest AI Chatbot Competition Ad Business Threat Looms
At the same time, Pinterest faces intensifying competition. The Information reported that the company is concerned AI chatbots could divert users who might otherwise visit Pinterest for inspiration-driven activities, such as wedding planning.
Pinterest has also struggled with encouraging users to visit the app as frequently as they use other social platforms and with accurately measuring ad effectiveness.
In late January, Pinterest announced it was laying off about 700 employees, roughly 15% of its workforce. In a securities filing, the company said the move was part of a restructuring effort designed to shift resources toward AI-focused roles and prioritize AI-powered products and capabilities.
The Pinterest AI chatbot competition ad business threat narrative underscores the broader industry challenge: balancing innovation with monetization as generative AI tools reshape how users search and discover content.
For now, Pinterest Lands $1 Billion Investment stands as a clear signal that investors believe in the company’s AI-driven transformation — even as it works to strengthen its advertising engine and defend against emerging AI rivals.
