Shopify AI Traffic Surge: 7x Growth in Visitors and 11x Rise in AI-Driven Orders

Shopify’s latest earnings call shows that AI is officially changing how people shop online. The company revealed a massive Shopify AI traffic surge, reporting that visits from AI-driven tools to its merchant stores have grown 7x since January, while orders through AI-powered search jumped 11x over the same period.

The Canadian e-commerce giant isn’t just adopting AI—it’s betting its entire future on it. During its third-quarter earnings report, Shopify’s president, Harley Finkelstein, called AI “the biggest shift in technology since the internet,” describing it as a tool that enables “more entrepreneurs to succeed faster than ever before.”

Data-Driven Growth Fueled by AI Partnerships

A big part of the Shopify AI traffic surge comes from the company’s partnerships with OpenAI, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot. These collaborations are helping Shopify integrate shopping directly into AI conversations—allowing users to discover, compare, and buy products within chat interfaces.

“We’ve been building and investing in this infrastructure to make it really easy to bring shopping into every single AI conversation,” Finkelstein said. “The fact that we’re already working with the leaders in the space is a testament to our commitment to prepare merchants for the next generation of commerce.”

A recent internal survey backs this up — 64% of shoppers say they’re “likely” to use AI tools when making purchasing decisions.

AI as the Core Engine, Not Just a Feature

Finkelstein emphasized that Shopify’s use of AI goes far beyond customer-facing tools. Internally, its system Scout uses AI to analyze hundreds of millions of data points — from merchant feedback and reviews to social interactions — helping employees make better product and design decisions faster.

“And Scout is just one of many tools,” he explained. “If you take away one thing from this call, it’s this: AI is not just a feature at Shopify—it’s the engine that powers everything we build.”

This internal and external dual approach is what makes the Shopify AI traffic surge sustainable and strategic, not just a temporary trend.

Building Toward “Agentic Commerce”

Shopify calls its long-term vision “agentic commerce” — a future where AI agents will automatically assist customers in finding, comparing, and purchasing products across multiple platforms.

Finkelstein acknowledged that the space is still evolving:

“We’re preparing for different permutations of how agentic commerce will develop. Whether it’s through chatbots, AI shopping agents, or integrated platforms, we want to be ready for whichever path wins.”

This approach mirrors Shopify’s earlier adaptability when social commerce and omnichannel retail became mainstream.

Financial Snapshot: Growth Continues Despite Market Dip

Shopify’s Q3 results were strong overall — revenue climbed 32% to $2.84 billion, while profit rose to $264 million (20 cents per share). However, shares dipped slightly after the company’s operating income of $434 million fell short of analyst expectations by a narrow margin ($437 million projected).

Still, the broader takeaway is clear: Shopify’s AI-first strategy is paying off. With the Shopify AI traffic surge showing 7x user growth and 11x more orders, the company is positioning itself as a frontrunner in the race toward AI-powered e-commerce.
