Spotify AI Coding: Developers Haven’t Written a Line Since December, Says Co-CEO

Spotify AI coding may have just hit a turning point.

During its fourth-quarter earnings call, Spotify revealed something remarkable: some of its best developers “have not written a single line of code since December.” The statement, made by co-CEO Gustav Söderström, signals a major shift in how software is being built inside one of the world’s largest streaming platforms.

If that sounds dramatic, it is. And it could mark a new era for Spotify AI coding—and possibly the broader tech industry.

How Spotify AI Coding Is Changing Development

Spotify’s engineering teams are now relying heavily on an internal AI system called “Honk.” This system leverages generative AI, including Claude Code, to automate development tasks and speed up product delivery.

An engineer commuting to work can use Slack on their phone to instruct Claude to fix a bug or add a feature to the iOS app. Once the AI completes the task, a new version of the app is pushed back to the engineer via Slack. According to Söderström, the system has “tremendously” accelerated coding and deployment velocity. And the company sees this as just the beginning of Spotify AI coding capabilities.

  • Scandinavians gravitate toward heavy metal

This diversity creates a complex, evolving dataset. Spotify argues that its scale gives it a unique advantage in training AI models tailored to taste, geography, and behavior.

In other words, Spotify AI coding isn’t just about faster app updates—it’s about reinforcing the company’s long-term competitive moat.

What About AI-Generated Music?

During the earnings call, analysts also raised questions about AI-generated music.

Spotify clarified that it allows artists and labels to disclose in metadata how a track was created. At the same time, the platform continues policing spam and low-quality uploads.

This suggests Spotify is walking a careful line: embracing AI in development while maintaining guardrails around content integrity.

The idea that elite engineers aren’t writing code themselves might sound extreme. But Spotify AI coding signals a broader shift in the role of software developers—from builders to orchestrators and reviewers of AI-generated output.

“We foresee this not being the end of the line in terms of AI development, just the beginning,” Söderström said.
