Tinder is turning to artificial intelligence to bring new life to its dating app. After nine straight quarters of declining paid subscribers, Match Group, Tinder’s parent company, announced a new Tinder AI feature designed to better understand users — and it’s raising eyebrows.
The feature, called Chemistry, will use AI to ask users interactive questions and, with permission, analyze photos from their Camera Roll to learn about their lifestyle, interests, and personality. Think of it as Tinder’s way of saying, “Let’s get to know you — really know you.”
Match Group CEO Spencer Rascoff described Chemistry as a “major pillar” of Tinder’s 2026 product experience, signaling the company’s big bet on AI personalization. The feature is already being piloted in New Zealand and Australia.
How the Tinder AI Feature Works
The new Tinder AI feature aims to go beyond swiping and surface-level bios. With your approval, it will analyze photos stored on your phone to spot hobbies and traits — like hiking, cooking, or traveling — and use that data to recommend matches with similar interests.
For example, if your Camera Roll is full of mountain photos and trail selfies, Tinder might pair you with someone who also loves the outdoors.
According to Match, this AI-driven approach will “learn more about users through natural interaction” and “enhance compatibility matching over time.”
However, while the company promises that user permission is required, some critics say the benefits for users remain limited compared to the level of data being accessed.
Tinder’s Revenue Slump and AI Bet
Tinder’s push for innovation comes at a tough time. Match reported that Tinder’s revenue declined 3% year-over-year, while paying users dropped 7%.
To make matters worse, Match said that testing the Tinder AI feature will negatively impact Tinder’s direct revenue by $14 million in Q4. Overall, Match expects revenue between $865 million and $875 million, short of analyst expectations of $884.2 million.
Despite the hit, the company believes that AI-powered personalization will ultimately increase engagement — and subscription growth — in the long term.
Tinder Is Using AI in Other Ways, Too
The new Tinder AI feature isn’t the company’s first foray into artificial intelligence. Tinder already uses AI in several other tools, including:
- Message moderation: An AI prompt that asks users, “Are you sure?” before sending potentially offensive messages.
- Photo selection: AI that helps users choose their most appealing photos for profiles.
- Profile design: Redesigned profiles featuring interactive prompts and more personalized layouts.
Tinder has also experimented with new experiences like dating “modes,” double dates, and advanced facial verification to make online dating safer and more engaging.
Will AI Save Tinder’s Love Life?
Even with these updates, Tinder faces a shifting dating landscape. Many younger users are moving toward real-world meetups instead of relying on apps, while economic uncertainty has cut into disposable income for many U.S. users.
Still, Match Group remains optimistic. By blending human connection with smarter, context-aware AI, the Tinder AI feature could mark a turning point in how people find love online.
The question now is whether users will feel comfortable letting AI peek into their private photo libraries to help them find “the one.”
