Walmart ChatGPT Shopping: You’ll Soon Be Able to Shop Directly from OpenAI’s Chatbot

Walmart is taking a bold step into AI-driven e-commerce. The retail giant has announced a new partnership with OpenAI that will let customers shop Walmart’s products — including groceries, household essentials, and more — directly through ChatGPT.

The feature, called Walmart ChatGPT shopping, allows users to explore, add to cart, and instantly check out without ever leaving the chatbot. Once customers link their Walmart accounts, they’ll see a new “Buy” button appear within ChatGPT’s interface, making shopping faster and more seamless than ever.

According to Walmart, this integration is designed to transform how consumers interact with online stores. Instead of manually searching for products, shoppers can describe what they need in natural language — from “healthy dinner ideas” to “back-to-school essentials” — and ChatGPT will automatically suggest and order relevant items.

Personalized AI Shopping Experience

The company says Walmart ChatGPT shopping will extend to Sam’s Club members as well, allowing them to plan meals, restock essentials, and discover new items through simple chat prompts. Even third-party sellers will be included once the feature fully rolls out later this fall.

Walmart believes the partnership with OpenAI will help it better predict customer needs, making online shopping more proactive and personalized. “We’re moving from reactive searches to predictive shopping experiences powered by AI,” the company said in a statement.

Walmart’s Expanding AI Ecosystem

This collaboration follows OpenAI’s broader push into e-commerce, which includes partnerships with Etsy and Shopify sellers to enable agentic shopping systems that combine product discovery, recommendations, and payments.

For Walmart, it’s just the latest in a series of AI-driven innovations. The retailer recently launched Sparky, its in-house generative AI shopping assistant, which helps customers compare products and make smarter purchase decisions. Sparky will soon support reordering, service booking, and even multimodal inputs from text, images, and video.

Walmart has also integrated OpenAI tools like ChatGPT Enterprise and OpenAI Certifications across its internal teams, helping streamline operations and improve customer service. The company says AI has already sped up its fashion production cycles by up to 18 weeks and reduced customer care timeframes by 40%.

The Future of AI-Powered Retail

Walmart President and CEO Doug McMillon said this shift marks a new era in online shopping. “For many years, e-commerce shopping experiences have consisted of a search bar and a list of item responses. That’s about to change,” McMillon said. “There’s a native AI experience coming that’s multimedia, personalized, and contextual — and we’re running toward that future with Sparky and through partnerships like this one with OpenAI.”

With Walmart ChatGPT shopping, the world’s largest retailer is betting that the future of e-commerce will be conversational, personalized, and powered entirely by AI.
