Elon Musk’s xAI has officially entered the high-stakes AI video race with the launch of the Grok Imagine API, a new video generation and editing toolkit designed for developers, creators, and production teams.
Announced on January 28, the Grok Imagine API arrives just weeks after xAI closed a massive $20 billion Series E funding round, signaling the company’s intent to aggressively compete with established players like OpenAI’s Sora and Google’s Veo models.
According to xAI, the new API outperforms rival systems on quality, cost, and latency—three factors that increasingly define real-world adoption of generative video tools.
Benchmark Results Put Grok Imagine API Ahead of Rivals
xAI says third-party evaluations back up its claims.
Based on benchmark data from Artificial Analysis and LMArena, the Grok Imagine API ranked favorably against:
- Google’s Veo 3.1 Fast and Veo 3
- OpenAI’s Sora 2 lineup
Latency testing involved running 10 identical prompts, repeated 10 times per model, measuring full end-to-end API response times for 8-second, 720p videos. xAI reports consistently faster turnaround times than competing models.
In video editing benchmarks, Grok Imagine achieved a 64.1% overall win rate against Runway Aleph in human-rated side-by-side evaluations.
Key scores included:
- Instruction following: 57.4% vs. 42.6%
- Visual consistency: 63.1% vs. 36.9%
These tests were conducted using IVEBench, which evaluates models across seven semantic dimensions.
What Developers Get With the Grok Imagine API
The Grok Imagine API supports both video generation and video editing workflows.
On the generation side, developers can:
- Convert text prompts or static images into videos
- Generate native audio alongside visuals
- Control camera actions such as zoom, pan, timelapse, and pull-back
- Output in portrait, landscape, and platform-specific aspect ratios
The editing toolkit enables:
