Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, is leveling up its flagship chatbot, Grok, with a brand new memory feature — aiming to match the personalized experience offered by rivals like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

Announced Wednesday night, Grok’s memory system allows the chatbot to retain and reference information from past conversations. Over time, this enables Grok to offer more relevant and personalized answers, especially when users return for follow-up recommendations or recurring discussions.

This marks a significant upgrade for Grok, which until now lacked persistent memory, often resetting context between conversations.

“Memories are transparent,” the official Grok account posted on X. “[Y]ou can see exactly what Grok knows and choose what to forget.”

Users can manage their data through the Data Controls section in Grok’s settings menu. The feature allows individual memories to be manually deleted, and full memory functionality can be toggled off entirely for those concerned about privacy.

Currently, the Grok memory feature is available in beta on Grok.com and through the iOS and Android apps — with availability on the X (formerly Twitter) interface still in development. Notably, the feature isn’t rolling out to users in the EU or U.K. just yet, likely due to local data protection regulations.

Grok’s memory upgrade puts xAI one step closer to closing the gap with ChatGPT, which recently expanded its own memory capabilities to reference a user’s entire chat history, and Gemini, which uses persistent memory to customize interactions.

As AI chatbots continue to evolve, memory is fast becoming one of the defining features that separate generic assistants from deeply personalized digital companions.
