Anthropic is upgrading the Claude free plan in a move that sharpens competition in the AI chatbot market.
After OpenAI introduced ads to its free and lower-cost ChatGPT tiers, Anthropic publicly criticized the shift and reaffirmed that Claude would remain ad-free. Now, the company is backing up that stance by expanding the Claude free plan with features that were previously locked behind a paywall.
For users debating whether to upgrade to a paid AI assistant, the expanded Claude free plan may offer enough new functionality to delay that decision.
What’s New in the Claude Free Plan
The updated Claude free tier now includes several tools that were once reserved for paid subscribers.
File creation: Users can create and save PowerPoint presentations, Excel spreadsheets, Word documents and PDFs directly from Claude conversations. This addition transforms the Claude free plan from a simple chat interface into a lightweight productivity tool.
Connectors: Select Connectors — previously available only in paid tiers — are now part of the Claude free plan. Anthropic specifically highlighted integration with Google Workspace apps, enabling users to connect Claude with their existing documents and workflows.
Skills: Custom Skills are also moving into the Claude free tier. These allow users to define reusable instruction sets so they don’t have to repeat the same prompts over and over. For frequent users, this significantly streamlines task execution.
Longer Conversations and Smarter Interactions
Beyond feature access, the Claude free plan is also improving session depth and responsiveness.
Anthropic is offering longer conversations per session, interactive responses, and enhanced image and voice search capabilities. For many users, the ability to sustain lengthier conversations may be the most meaningful upgrade, especially for research-heavy or multi-step tasks.
These changes make the Claude free plan feel less restricted and more capable for everyday use.
Competitive Timing
The expansion of the Claude free tier comes at a strategically significant moment.
With ChatGPT’s most accessible plans now including ads, Anthropic’s ad-free positioning becomes a stronger differentiator. The company has publicly emphasized that Claude will remain free of advertising, reinforcing its alternative approach.
For users frustrated by monetization changes elsewhere, the enhanced Claude free tier could appear increasingly attractive.
Whether these new capabilities are sufficient to shift user loyalty remains to be seen. But the message from Anthropic is clear: meaningful AI functionality doesn’t necessarily have to sit behind a paywall.
