Google Play AI security significantly strengthened Android’s ecosystem in 2025, with Google revealing that its AI-driven systems blocked 1.75 million policy-violating apps before they reached users. The company says its advanced AI protections are increasingly deterring malicious developers, contributing to a decline from 2.36 million blocked apps in 2024.

The latest data highlights how artificial intelligence is becoming central to app marketplace security, helping Google detect threats faster and protect billions of Android users worldwide.

Google Play AI Security Blocks Millions of Malicious Apps

Google Play AI security now relies on multi-layer protection systems that analyze apps before and after they are published. According to Google, more than 10,000 safety checks are performed on every app submission, followed by continuous monitoring once the app goes live.

The company said its latest generative AI models help human reviewers identify harmful patterns more efficiently, allowing faster detection of malware, policy violations, and suspicious behaviors.

Beyond blocking apps, Google Play AI security also prevented 255,000 applications from gaining excessive access to sensitive user data in 2025. This marks a significant drop from 1.3 million apps flagged for similar violations the previous year.

AI Helps Prevent Spam and Review Manipulation

Google’s AI-driven safeguards also targeted manipulation tactics within the app marketplace. The company blocked 160 million spam ratings, preventing review bombing attempts that could have reduced app ratings by an average of 0.5 stars.

These protections help maintain trust in the platform by ensuring app ratings reflect genuine user experiences rather than coordinated attacks or artificial engagement.

Play Protect Expands Android Threat Detection

Google Play AI security extends beyond app submissions through Google Play Protect, the company’s Android security system. In 2025, Play Protect identified over 27 million new malicious apps, warning users or blocking them entirely.

The enhanced fraud protection system now covers 2.8 billion Android devices across 185 markets. It also blocked 266 million risky side-loading attempts, preventing users from installing potentially harmful applications outside the official store.

Google said initiatives such as developer verification, mandatory pre-review checks, and strict testing requirements have raised the security standards of the Google Play ecosystem and reduced opportunities for bad actors.

Google Continues Investing in AI-Driven Defenses

Google confirmed it will continue investing in AI-powered security tools to stay ahead of emerging threats while supporting developers in building safer applications. The company has frequently highlighted these investments to justify its app store fees, emphasizing the value of its security infrastructure.

However, the Google Play Store remains under regulatory scrutiny in Europe and other regions over concerns about market dominance. Although Google revised its fee structure last year for developers using alternative payment methods, European Union regulators recently claimed the company still falls short of Digital Markets Act compliance.

Despite ongoing regulatory challenges, Google Play AI security remains a core part of the company’s strategy to strengthen platform safety and protect Android users globally.
