Meta has officially launched its Meta AI app, a standalone artificial intelligence assistant designed to rival popular tools like ChatGPT and Claude. Announced at Meta’s inaugural LlamaCon developer conference, the Meta AI app integrates the company’s vast social data to deliver a uniquely personalized AI experience — and marks Meta’s most aggressive push yet into the competitive AI assistant space.
Personalized AI Using Facebook & Instagram Data
Unlike ChatGPT or Anthropic’s Claude, the Meta AI app uses years of data you’ve shared on Facebook and Instagram to personalize your experience. This includes your likes, profile information, interactions, and even who you follow — all to help the AI deliver more relevant, contextual responses.
Meta confirmed that its AI assistant can “[draw] on information you’ve already chosen to share on Meta products.” Users can also voluntarily teach the AI more about themselves — for example, telling it you’re lactose intolerant so it avoids cheese-based restaurant suggestions in future travel tips.

Available in the U.S. and Canada
At launch, the Meta AI app is available only in the United States and Canada. No official word has been given about global availability, but the success of the rollout could determine how quickly Meta expands access.
Discover Feed: AI + Social Sharing
A unique feature of the app is its “Discover feed”, where users can share selected AI conversations or results with friends. This opt-in feed is designed to turn everyday AI use into a social experience, helping viral trends — like Ghibli-style filters or Barbie AI avatars — take off faster.

In demo images, users were shown asking fun prompts like “Describe me in 3 emojis” and sharing the results in their feed. It’s a clear attempt by Meta to turn AI chats into social moments — a direction that sets the app apart from the utilitarian tone of many current AI platforms.
Privacy and Data Concerns
While personalization is the app’s biggest selling point, it also raises familiar concerns. Meta’s business model depends heavily on advertising, and critics are warning that deeper user engagement through the Meta AI app could offer even more granular data for targeted ads.
Although Meta claims that data used for AI personalization is consent-based, users are advised to review privacy policies closely, especially if they plan to use the memory and sharing features.
The Bigger Strategy: Meta’s AI Ecosystem
This app is the latest piece of Meta’s expanding AI puzzle. The company has already integrated Meta AI into WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. But this standalone app is clearly Meta’s effort to:
- Build an independent platform like ChatGPT
- Reinforce its advantage through social context
- Convert casual users into long-term AI adopters
It comes at a time when Meta is also trying to regain ground after a lukewarm reception to its Llama 4 models. With AI competitors like OpenAI, Google, and xAI racing ahead, Meta is banking on deep personalization and social virality to stand out.
