Meta has announced upcoming parental control features designed to give parents more oversight of their teens’ interactions with AI characters across its platforms. These features, set to roll out next year, aim to balance teen engagement with AI while keeping conversations age-appropriate and safe.
Selective AI Access for Teens
Starting in the coming months, parents will be able to turn off chats with AI characters entirely for teens. This measure does not restrict access to Meta’s general-purpose AI chatbot, which will only engage in age-appropriate conversations.
For families seeking more granular oversight, Meta will allow parents to disable chats with individual AI characters. This ensures parents can provide teens with selective access to AI interactions while maintaining safety controls.
Monitoring Topics and Interaction Time
Meta’s new tools will also provide parents with insights into the topics teens discuss with AI characters and Meta AI, helping families stay informed about online activity. Time limits can also be applied, ensuring balanced usage of AI experiences.
“These parental controls are part of our commitment to providing helpful tools and resources that make internet safety simpler for parents, especially as new technologies like AI become increasingly common,” wrote Instagram head Adam Mosseri and Meta AI head Alexandr Wang in a company post.
PG-13 AI Content for Teen Safety
Meta emphasized that all AI experiences for teens will follow a PG-13 content standard, avoiding sensitive topics such as extreme violence, nudity, and graphic drug use. Currently, teens interact only with a limited set of AI characters that adhere to age-appropriate content guidelines.
Additionally, Instagram has implemented AI systems to detect teens attempting to bypass age restrictions by falsifying their age, further reinforcing safety measures.
Industry-Wide Focus on Teen Safety
Meta’s announcement follows a trend among major AI platforms, including OpenAI and YouTube, which are introducing new teen safety tools and controls. These changes come amid growing public concern about social media’s impact on teen mental health and ongoing lawsuits alleging that AI platforms contributed to teen harm.
By providing Meta AI parental controls, the company aims to ensure that teens can safely explore AI interactions without exposure to harmful or inappropriate content.
Rollout Timeline
Meta plans to launch these controls on Instagram in early 2026, initially in English across the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia. Parents can expect tools that combine blocking options, conversation monitoring, and time management for teen interactions with AI characters.
“We are committed to making AI experiences safe and age-appropriate for younger users, giving parents confidence and teens freedom to explore responsibly,” the company said.
