Spain has launched a major investigation into AI-generated child sexual abuse material, targeting major social media platforms including X, Meta, and TikTok. The move reflects growing global pressure on tech companies over the misuse of artificial intelligence and the spread of harmful content online.
Spain Launches Probe Into AI-Generated Child Sexual Abuse Material
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced that prosecutors have been directed to investigate whether X, Meta, and TikTok are involved in the creation or distribution of AI-generated child sexual abuse material.
The government’s action is part of a broader crackdown on digital platforms accused of enabling abusive practices, including harmful content distribution, addictive design features, and privacy violations.
Sanchez emphasized that authorities must act to protect children’s rights and well-being. He stated that social media platforms have been undermining the dignity, mental health, and safety of young users.
The companies named in the investigation did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Growing Global Pressure on Big Tech Platforms
Spain’s probe comes amid increasing global scrutiny of online platforms and artificial intelligence systems. Governments across Europe and beyond are investigating how AI tools are being misused to generate explicit or harmful content.
Authorities worldwide have already raised concerns about sexually explicit content created using AI technologies, including content linked to Elon Musk’s xAI chatbot Grok on X. Several countries have introduced investigations, restrictions, and demands for stronger safeguards to prevent the spread of illegal AI-generated material.
Earlier in February, French authorities raided X’s offices as part of a separate investigation into platform practices. Meanwhile, Ireland’s Data Protection Commission also opened a formal inquiry into Grok over its handling of personal data and its potential to generate harmful sexualized content involving minors.
Proposed Measures to Protect Children Online
Spain has introduced additional measures to strengthen child protection in digital spaces. The government recently proposed restricting social media access for individuals under 16 as part of broader efforts to combat online abuse.
The Spanish parliament has also been tasked with examining Meta’s data practices involving Facebook and Instagram users, highlighting growing regulatory concerns about privacy and platform accountability.
These actions demonstrate how governments are intensifying efforts to regulate AI technologies and hold platforms accountable for the spread of AI-generated child sexual abuse material.
European Crackdown on AI Safety and Platform Accountability
The investigation reflects a wider regulatory push across Europe aimed at controlling harmful AI use and ensuring digital platforms comply with safety and privacy standards.
European regulators are increasingly focusing on how AI systems process personal data, generate content, and influence online environments. Authorities argue that stronger oversight is necessary to protect users — especially minors — from emerging risks linked to advanced AI technologies.
Spain’s probe signals that the debate around AI-generated child sexual abuse material is becoming a central issue in global discussions about artificial intelligence governance and online safety.
